THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- The Woodlands Fall Flea Market will be held on Saturday, September 17, 2011, from 7 to 10 a.m., in the Town Center Parking Garage. The garage is located at the southwest corner of Six Pines Drive and Lake Robbins, adjacent to The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion.

Tickets for booth spaces for sellers will go on sale Saturday, August 27, from 8:30 a.m. to noon, near Randall’s Supermarket in the Panther Creek Shopping Center. Any booth tickets remaining after that date will be available at The Woodlands Township Service Center, located at 2201 Lake Woodlands Drive (directly across the street from The Woodlands United Methodist Church), Monday – Friday 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., excluding Labor Day.

The flea market is a cooperative event with all The Woodlands’ villages participating. The fees for sellers are $50 per booth space, $100 for a vehicle and trailer. There is no fee for buyers. Any proceeds over cost are funneled back into the community in the form of scholarships, grants and other village association projects.

The Woodlands covenants and deed restrictions do not permit garage sales on residential properties. The flea market provides a means for The Woodlands residents to sell unwanted household goods. Bargain hunters who buy pre-owned items keep them out of the landfill and lessen their impact on the environment. Buying “recycled” products also preserves the natural resources that are used in the manufacturing of these items.

For booth space information, please call Larry Faith at 281 681-0036. For general information, please call the flea market information line at 281 210-3976 or Pamela Woods at 281 210-3900.

Fourth Of July Activities In The Woodlands To Continue Without Fireworks

Fireworks have become a long-standing tradition for a number of community events in The Woodlands, but due to extreme drought conditions in Montgomery County, The Woodlands Township announced today the cancellation of the July 4, 2011 fireworks show during the community's 14th Annual Red, Hot & Blue Festival.

All other entertainment and activities for the weekend celebration will continue as scheduled, creating a patriotic weekend of fun for the entire family.

This is the first time in The Woodlands 36 years of hosting fireworks that the show had to be cancelled.

"The Woodlands has and always will be committed to public safety, and one of the most valued characteristics of our area is our forest," said Nick Wolda, president of The Woodlands Convention & Visitors Bureau. "This decision has been made not to chance any loss of our natural beauty and any damage to our residential or commercial properties as a result of the public fireworks display."

While the fireworks show has been cancelled, Wolda adds there's plenty for families to look forward to when it comes to celebrating July 4th in The Woodlands.

Now in its 14th year, the annual Red, Hot & Blue Festival, produced by The Woodlands Convention & Visitors Bureau and presented by Ellis & Ellis, will be held Monday, July 4,2011 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Town Green Park and Waterway Square, both located along The Woodlands Waterway®. The festival has become one of the more popular July Fourth celebrations in the region, highlighted by hot dog and watermelon eating contests, live entertainment and more.

Even before July 4th, there are plenty of ways to celebrate America's independence in The Woodlands.

Stop by Waterway Square on Saturday, July 2 and enjoy live music and strolling entertainment, as the popular series, Waterway Nights at Waterway Square, will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Also on July 2, The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion will host The Music of the Eagles, as presented by the Houston Symphony and a full rock band accompanied by singers Terry Brock, Randy Jackson and John Hines. Gates open at 7 p.m. Mezzanine and lawn seating is free. Orchestra seats are $20 each.

On Sunday, July 3, 2011 gather the family and relax under the stars when the Houston Symphony performs its Star Spangled Salute, a free concert at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion starting at 8 p.m.

Before the Red, Hot & Blue Festival on July 4, 2011 head over to head Market Street - The Woodlands for the South County Fourth of July parade, "Celebrating the American Dream", which starts at 9 a.m.

After the parade, beat the heat by visiting one of The Woodland's13 pools for Splash Day from noon to 4 p.m.

Later that evening, Northshore Park, located just west of Lake Front Circle on Lake Woodlands Drive, will have the "Things That Go" Parade at 5:30 p.m. Children 14 years and younger are encouraged to bring their patriotically-decorated bike, scooter or wagon and parade around the park. Awards for the most creative entries will be awarded throughout the afternoon. Afterwards, enjoy a free, live music concert from local country band Buck Yeager at Concert in the Park.

The cable provider this week began selling a 105-megabits-per-second service to residential customers, initially only in The Woodlands. The service will be expanded to adjacent neighborhoods soon, and eventually will be available throughout the Houston area.

Called Extreme 105, the service costs $105 a month for the first 12 months, provided you are using other Comcast services, such as phone or TV. The price goes up to $129.99 after a year. Customers who don't want any other Comcast services will pay $199.95 a month for the Internet access alone. There's also a $249 installation fee.

A Comcast spokesman said the service requires a newer DOCSIS 3.0 modem, and technicians must check a customer's home wiring and computers to ensure they can deliver the speed.

Most Comcast customers have older, DOCSIS 2.0 modems, though the company has been selling a DOCSIS 3.0-based service — Extreme 50 - in Houston for about a year. An 802.11n Wi-Fi router is also included with the service.

As with Comcast's other Internet offerings, Extreme 105 customers are subject to a data transfer cap of 250 gigabytes a month, the spokesman said.

The offering is one of the fastest residential Internet services in the Houston area. Many wired, corporate networks run at 100 Mbps, a technology called Fast Ethernet.

At 105 Mbps, customers would be able to download 4 gigabytes of data - about the size of a high-definition movie - in about five minutes.

By comparison, competitor AT&T's U-verse Internet service has a maximum speed of 24 Mbps at $65 a month. Verizon's FiOS is available in some area suburbs at 50 Mbps for $139.95.

Kate Smith, nationally acclaimed author, color expert and trend forecaster, will give tips on how to find connecting colors that flow throughout a home to create elegant room designs from the living room to the patio.

Houses are built from the ground up, but when color expert and trend forecaster Kate Smith visits the Ninth Annual Spring Home & Garden Show at The Woodlands, visitors will discover how home exteriors are decorated from the roof down. The show is set for Saturday and Sunday, February 19-20, 2011 at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel & Convention Center.

A nationally acclaimed author and public speaker, Smith teaches the art of exterior design, accentuating a home’s more subtle features to create a cohesive and high-end look. Smith advocates identifying the home’s permanent elements, such as the brick and sidewalk, and choosing colors that pick up on those features.

“Start looking at all of your home’s common elements,” Smith said. “Do you have a partial stone in front that picks up the tan brick and green shades in the roof? If you really look at your home, the color almost naturally pops out at you.”

One of the most exciting new elements of exterior design is roofing. Smith said roofs have gone from simply functional to being an integral part of the color scheme. Tiles are now made in color blends of up to five hues, giving homeowners more choices in accent colors.

“You can beautifully blend theses colors in with your siding color or front door and still have a customized look for your home,” she said.

Once homeowners have a color scheme, Smith said many want to know how to create the illusion of a larger space.

“A lot of people forget how to use color to enhance a space, especially outside, but I have little clues I give,” she said. “If you are trying to make your property look larger, put a bright element like a plant or a piece of lawn furniture that really draws color to a far corner. Your eye is immediately drawn to that farthest point. It fools the eye because it’s more about contrast than color.”

But Smith said choosing a color for the front door is usually what gives homeowners the most trouble when it comes to exterior design.

“A good rule of thumb is to figure out what colors you’re already dealing with,” Smith said. “Look at the brick. Look at the grout color. Is it more gold or gray? Start to get a sense of what elements are in common. Each homeowner needs to layer their personality on to a home’s features. Think about who you are and what you want to project to the world, and the process will become infinitely easier,” she said.

Many of Smith’s trending ideas apply to a home inside and out. She helps homeowners find a connecting color throughout their house. She will discuss interior decorating at the show, explaining how complex color palettes can be used to craft elegant and sophisticated room designs that work in the living room or on the patio.

We hope to see another great turnout as friends gather to have a great time and support a very deserving cause that affects so many women and children who have experienced domestic violence, which happens more than most people realize right here in our community. The funds we raise will help us continue to significantly help women and children who find themselves in the most difficult situation of their lives.”
The M Group maintains more than 15 Mi Cocina restaurants in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, and this is the first location for The Woodlands and the only one in the Houston area. Mi Cocina plans a July opening along the waterway at The Woodlands Mall, near P.F. Chang’s China Bistro and Fleming’s Steakhouse and Wine Bar.

‘Mi Cocina has a wonderful reputation in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and we are delighted to be able to introduce the restaurant’s unique Tex Mex flavors to diners in The Woodlands,’ says Ms. Burton. ‘The new Mi Cocina location will offer a very pleasing setting, with its views over the waterway. And, the restaurant’s high standards when it comes to offering a welcoming atmosphere, excellent service and Tex Mex dishes make Mi Cocina an ideal addition to the restaurants here at The Woodlands Mall.’

The new Mi Cocina will showcase timeless, classic design and encompass natural elements, such as stone and deep rich woods to create a warm and family-friendly atmosphere that is synonymous with the restaurant.

Mi Cocinais part of the M Crowd Restaurant Group, which operates over 25 restaurants under three names—Mi Cocina, Taco Diner and The Mercury. Because of its relaxed atmosphere, high service standards and authentic Tex Mex menu, Mi Cocina offers an unparalleled dining experience and has become a favorite in Dallas and Forth Worth. There are more than 15 Mi Cocina locations across the metroplex including locations in Las Colinas, Fort Worth, Plano and Southlake.
The speaker will be Mike Howlett, a herpetologist (snake expert) with the Jesse Jones Park and Nature Center in Humble. Howlett's program, which is appropriate for everyone from elementary school students to adults, will dispel popular myths about snakes and teach attendees the most recognizable traits of various breeds.

The program will feature live snakes in a safe, contained environment.

The snakes talk is the first in a series of nature programs to be offered in The Woodlands this year called "A Walk in the Woods." The series is organized by the township and sponsored by Hilton Garden Inn, Waste Management, Pineywoods Nursey, and The Woodlands Grass Roots Environmental Education Network (GREEN).

Construction of a new three-story, 300-unit apartment complex is set to begin in the spring on the site of the old Woodlands Athletic Center property in the Village of Grogan's Mill.

Greystar Real Estate Partners, which develops and manages apartments in more than 80 U.S. markets, has purchased the 12.4-acre site at 11111 Winterberry Place. The company plans to open the new "pet friendly" complex in early 2012, said Dan Leverett, vice president for The Woodlands Development Co.

The announcement will be a disappointment to some Grogan's Mill residents who oppose apartments at the old WAC site. Development Standards Committee chairwoman Deborah Sargeant, who also heads the Grogan's Mill Village Association, voted against preliminary plans for the project last December.

"I'm not against apartment complexes," Sargeant said. "I'm opposed to apartments in that location because we have too many and I think it's the wrong usage for that land."

According to an announcement of the project, the "upscale garden apartment community" will have entrances and exits off South Millbend Drive, with a secondary emergency exit off Winterberry Place.

The gated complex with one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments, plus 500 parking spaces will include a 30- to 40-foot border of wooded preserve, and will have access to The Woodlands' hike and bike trail network.

Exteriors will feature rough-sawn cedar and stone, with detached garages and carports available for rent. The average size of the apartments will be 930 square feet.

Scott Wise, executive director of Charleston-based Greystar Real Estate Partners, said the site was "exceptionally well located" in The Woodlands. "The project will target the diverse mix of active professionals who enjoy the many amenities the area has to offer. We're really excited about developing and owning a project in one of Houston's resilient submarkets."

Sargeant said the project would add more traffic to already congested South Millbend Drive.

E-mails from fellow Grogan's Mill residents have been "overwhelmingly" against the apartment plan, she added. "They would love to see a park there or something else that is not another apartment complex."

Township Chairman Bruce Tough acknowledged resident concern over the fate of the old WAC property.

"(Redevelopment) is the future of The Woodlands in our older villages. You have areas that were built 30 or 40 years ago and there is now a higher and better use for the land. That's the evolution of communities."

Tough said there is a high demand for quality apartments in The Woodlands. Younger workers who like the concept of living where they work need alternatives to single-family homes, he said.

"Developers make those decisions based on their demographic surveys. I know the two most recent apartments the Boardwalk and the Millennium have high occupancy. They are in big demandSo if I were developing and investing a lot of money into a development project, I'd want one that was going to be assured of success."

Meeks + Partners Architects designed the new Grogan's Mill project.

A 6,500-square-foot clubhouse, resort-style pool with fitness center, tanning room, cyber café and dog park are among on-site amenities. The apartments are being designed for LEED Home Certification and National Green Building Standards Certification, said Susan Vreeland-Wendt, a spokeswoman for the development company.

THE WOODLANDS, TX (JANUARY 3, 2011) - Connecting Families, a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit agency, is offering a way for women to connect with their dreams, desires and passions for the New Year by hosting Let the Magic Begin, a ladies night out workshop to be held at Americas restaurant.

This mission of our agency is to connect and strengthen families, Diana Boulanger said, executive director for Connecting Families. We thought offering a workshop where women can connect with their dreams and goals through crafting a Vision Board was a great way to start the New Year.

A Vision Board is an oversized visual organizer on foam core board where women can paste images of their inner longings they hope to achieve in the coming year. During the year women can use the Vision Board as a means to keep focused on their goals and keep that inner-passion ignited.

The event will be held at Americas, located at 21 Waterway Avenue in The Woodlands, on Thursday, January 13, 5:30-8pm. Admission is $35 for the workshop which includes hot appetizers, supplies, a special gift box surprise along with a host of raffle prizes guests can take home that evening. All proceeds go directly to Connecting Families to sponsor programs and counseling support as BBVA Compass is sponsoring the event for the agency.

At BBVA Compass, we work for a better future for people, said Amos McDonald, Senior Vice President and District Retail Executive for North Houston. Sponsoring Connecting Families Let the Magic Begin helps us achieve our vision in a very tangible way. We are proud to sponsor this great community event which helps to empower women.

Americas restaurant is featuring some of their premium appetizers like beef tenderloin and Stilton fondue crostini; crab cakes Cordua; empanaditas with cilantro dressing; plantain crusted chicken with spicy black bean sauce along with a cash bar for all guests to enjoy.

Americas restaurant and BBVA Compass have been very generous to us so that we can host this one-of-a-kind event, Boulanger said. This workshop will benefit women throughout the year and also our agency as well.

Connecting Families offers parenting classes, divorce workshops and counseling support to families of Montgomery County.
